Srinagar: The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar is set to officially get a new principal as the government issued an order on Thursday, March 2, appointing Dr Masood Tanvir Bhat as the new principal of the institution. 

Dr Bhat has been serving as the Professor & HoD of Medicine of the Government Medical College in Srinagar and as the acting principal of the college following the retirement of former Principal Samia Rashid. The government order was issued by Bhupinder Kumar, Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department.

It stated, "Sanction is hereby accorded to the appointment of Dr. Masood Tanvir Bhat, Professor & HoD, Government Medical College Srinagar as Principal, Government Medical College Srinagar, with effect from 03.11.2022 in Pay Level-15 (Rs. 182200-224100)." 

Stating that he would be focusing on improving the healthcare facilities at the hospital, Dr Bhat told the Greater Kashmir, "We will take hospital care to the next level in terms of technology and the modernization. We will focus on providing all the facilities in our hospitals and try to meet the expectations of the people. We will also improve the education system and train our students to the best level." 

Further, he said that people in Kashmir are dependent on government healthcare in comparison to other parts of the country. He added, "Our hospitals are still in a better position to provide better healthcare facilities to the people. But still, there is a need to improve the overall health scenario. We will definitely work on that as well." 

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the initiative of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) for increasing the intake capacity of MDS courses in four specialties at the Government Dental College & Hospital (GDC&H). The Ministry also renewed the permission for the MDS seats in Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology as 3 seats each.
