IAS Dr Raghav Langer appointed Secretary of National Medical Commission

New Delhi: In a significant recruitment, Dr Raghav Langer, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from Jammu and Kashmir has been appointed as the Secretary of the National Medical Commission at the Joint Secretary (JS) level under the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

According to the official order, his tenure will last until October 3, 2025, or until further orders, whichever comes first. This appointment is part of his combined seven-year central deputation period, which includes his previous postings in the central government. 

An alumnus of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, Dr. Langer belongs to the 2009 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He is among 35 IAS officers, elevated to the rank of joint secretary or joint secretary equivalent level with pay at Level 14 of the pay matrix.

The NMC is the country’s apex regulatory body for medical education, professionals, institutes, and research. Established in 2020, it replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI) through an Act of Parliament. The commission is tasked with registering medical colleges and professionals, as well as assessing and grading both private and government medical institutions to ensure quality healthcare standards.

An order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Department of Personnel and Training as reported by Greater Kashmir stated, “Appointment of Raghav Langer, IAS (UD: 2009) as Secretary, National Medical Commission (NMC) (JS level) under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, from the date of assumption of the charge of the post, for a combined tenure of 7 years up to October 3, 2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier vice Sandhya Bhullar, IAS (GJ: 2003)."

Dr Langer previously held charges as the Director of the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. He has held several significant positions during his inter-cadre deputation to Jammu and Kashmir. 

His roles included Divisional Commissioner of Jammu, Secretary of Planning, and District Commissioner of Kathua and Pulwama where he played a key role in leading the region’s COVID-19 mitigation efforts. His proactive leadership and coordination skills during the pandemic earned him widespread recognition.
