Illegal Abortion Racket: Doctor, 2 others arrested in Faridabad

Gurugram: In a crackdown against illegal abortion in the city, the Faridabad police raided the Samrat Hospital in Ballabhgarh based on a tip-off and arrested a doctor along with two others in connection with the case.

In a joint investigation, the police found substantial evidence during the raid to charge the doctor for allegedly performing an illegal abortion on a woman. The accused were taken into custody on Thursday.

An FIR was filed against the doctor and two others under various criminal offences at the Faridabad police station.

As per a media report in HT, the Health Department, Faridabad were the first to approach the police regarding the matter after the department received the intel from a woman. Based on the tip-off, the investigation team and the health officials worked together to nab the culprits in connection with the case.

According to the plan, the health department officials sent the woman (who provided the intel) to the hospital. The woman reached the hospital and met with the accused doctor and her son. When the woman asked for an abortion, the doctor charged her Rs 15,000 to which the woman paid Rs 3000 in advance. The accused son then asked her to return for the procedure on Sunday.

“On Sunday, the woman returned for the abortion at 4 pm. Soon after the abortion was done, the woman signaled the team, following which a raid was conducted and three people, including the doctor, were taken into custody. Her son took the balance amount of Rs 12,000 and left the hospital before the procedure,” said Faridabad deputy commissioner of police Narender Kadiyan.

It came to the fore that the doctor was allegedly performing the procedures under her maiden name and his son was the assistant in the surgeries. Following the raid, her son fled from the scene and the search is on to nab him.

While investigating the case, the police discovered a shocking revelation. It was found that the doctor charged with the crime of conducting illegal abortion is the wife of the infamous main accused in the 2007 kidney racket case.

The case, one of the largest transplant rackets reported in India in recent years, has dominated the country’s headlines and sparked calls for the government to tighten regulation of kidney transplants to stop backstreet operations as global demand rises.

Hundreds of people from across northern India had their kidneys removed at a private house, which had a state-of-the-art operating theatre hidden inside, after being lured to Gurgaon, a city of hi-tech companies just outside New Delhi.

Several people were arrested, including some doctors.

Around 400 or 500 kidney transplants were done by these doctors over the last nine years. The doctor accused of heading the group fled the country. As many as 50 medical officials were involved in the racket.

At least five foreigners -- two U.S. and three Greek citizens -- were found in a luxury guesthouse operated by the doctor running the racket.
