SGPGI Director, Wife Test Covid-19 Positive despite taking vaccine shots

Lucknow: The Director of Lucknow-based Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Professor RK Dhiman has tested positive for novel coronavirus infection on Thursday. Dhiman's wife has also tested positive for the virus. The couple had reportedly taken both the doses of vaccine against Covid-19.

Professor Dhiman took the first dose of the Covishield vaccine on January 16 and the second one on February 15. Naturally, his testing positive for the virus has put a big question mark before the effectiveness of the vaccine.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, Dhiman's wife was the one who was tested positive for the virus first. Following this, the process of contact tracing began, and eventually the Director of SGPGI tested positive for the infection as well. His report came on Thursday Evening.

Soon afterwards, the Director took to his Facebook account to inform people about his situation. Sharing a photograph with his wife, the Professor wrote, "I and my wife have become positive for Covid 19. Two days ago Dr Praveena has come positive and today I have come positive for Covid 19 RT PCR."

"Those who have come in contact with me or with my wife in the last seven days kindly take necessary precautions. We are absolutely fine, Take care," added Prof Dhiman in his social media post.

While commenting on the matter, Dr PK Gupta, former president, IMA (Lucknow) informed the Hindustan Times, "There is a possibility of people testing positive for Covid despite taking the vaccine shot, but the intensity of the virus would be lesser."

Meanwhile, TOI has added, the SGPGI authorities have claimed to start the necessary sanitization work of the director's office. They have informed the daily that the process of contact tracing has also been initiated.

"As many as 25 persons have been tested and reports are awaited," added the sources.
