Padma Shri awardee Prof Dr R K Dhiman appointed AIIMS Patna Chairman

Patna: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has appointed Padma Shri awardee Prof. Dr Radha Krishna Dhiman as the chairman of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), AIIMS Patna. Dr Dhiman currently serves as the director of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow and the Kalyan Singh Superspecialty Cancer Institute, Lucknow.

Apart from this, Dhiman has also been appointed as a permanent member of the Institute Body of AIIMS Patna. Now he will make significant contributions to the administration of AIIMS, Patna, news agency UNI reported. 

Dr. Dhiman, who implemented the Punjab model across the country, played an important role in formulating a cost-effective algorithm for the treatment of hepatitis C at the public health level in Punjab.

Based on the success of the Punjab model, the Government of India launched the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP) on July 28, 2018, which provides for free diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis through the National Health Mission.

Dr. Dhiman obtained an MBBS and MD in Medicine from King George Medical College, Lucknow, in 1984 and 1987 and a Doctorate in Medicine (Gastroenterology) from SGPGI in 1991. He received fellowships from several institutions, including American College of Gastroenterology, the American Association for Study of Liver Diseases, Royal College of Physicians, London and Edinburgh and the National Academy of Medical Sciences. 

Dr. Dhiman was awarded Padma Shri by President of India Draupadi Murmu in 2024 and Dr. B C Roy National Award, the highest in the medical field, by then President of India Smt. Pratibha Patil in 2008. He has been awarded the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Award four times.

Dr Dhiman contributed significantly to fight against Covid in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He is the Chairman of the UP State Advisory Boards on Covid management and Covid-Associated Mucormycosis (CAM) in Uttar Pradesh.
