Jodhpur Hospital wrong blood transfusion probe names 2 resident doctors among 4

Jodhpur: Four hospital staff members, including two resident doctors, have been held responsible by a five-member inquiry committee investigating the alleged transfusion of the wrong blood group to a postpartum woman at Ummed Hospital in Jodhpur.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that an inquiry committee has been constituted at Umaid Hospital, the largest maternal and child healthcare facility in Rajasthan's Jodhpur division, after a woman allegedly was transfused with the wrong blood group following childbirth, resulting in serious complications that reportedly affected her kidneys.

The five-member inquiry committee submitted its findings to the principal of Dr. S.N. Medical College, who has forwarded the report to the college's disciplinary committee for further action.

The incident involved a woman who delivered a baby through normal delivery on July 11 and was later referred to Ummed Hospital after developing severe anaemia.

According to news reports, she was initially transfused with O-positive blood. However, during a second transfusion on July 12, she was allegedly administered B-positive blood instead, resulting in a severe transfusion reaction that led to deterioration in her condition, urinary failure and kidney complications.

She was shifted to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital on July 13 for advanced treatment, where she remains admitted and continues to undergo dialysis. Hospital officials said her condition is currently stable.

Speaking to TOI, Ummed Hospital superintendent Mohan Makwana said the inquiry report identified two resident doctors, nursing staff members and a laboratory technician as responsible. “Action will be taken as recommended by the disciplinary committee,” he said.

The inquiry panel had initially submitted a report pointing to procedural lapses but without identifying individual responsibility. However, after Dr S N Medical College Principal Dr B S Jodha sought a revised report, the committee named the personnel allegedly involved in the incident.

Dr Jodha said the disciplinary committee would now examine the findings and recommend appropriate action, following which the hospital administration would proceed accordingly.
