New Delhi: The two largest and most crowded hospitals in the capital- Hindu Rao Hospital and Kasturba Hospital is set to get a makeover worth Rs 15 crore, which is expected to be completed in 9 months.

In order to rejuvenate both healthcare centres, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has invited tenders for the development works of the hospitals. Due to the buildings being old and dilapidated, the MCD has decided to renovate parts of both hospitals.

The present-day modern Hindu Rao Hospital, the largest hospital under the Delhi Municipal Corporation is situated on the green, picturesque hilltop, located in the green belt of Delhi.

The hospital caters to the medical and health needs of a number of referred patients from the dispensaries and colony hospitals managed by MCD, the nearby public hospitals managed by the Delhi administration and many charitable and private institutions.

However, the hospital paints a dismal picture of the hygiene with stray dogs roaming in its corridors, dilapidated buildings, spit stains in corners and filthy toilets. Last year on September 23, 2022, a parapet wall of an operation theatre complex collapsed, damaging several vehicles.

The renovation includes the drainage system, the water supply system, toilet blocks, shafts of the main two-storey and six-storey ward blocks of the hospital at a cost of Rs 4.32 crore.

“Another ₹4 crore will be spent on the OPD block of the Hindu Rao Hospital, which will include a complete overhaul of the drainage system, waterproofing of terraces, repair of rooms and shafts. We will undertake repair works worth ₹2.11 crore in the nursing block and ₹2.09 crore in the emergency and casualty sections,” the official explained to HT.

Similarly, Kasturba Hospital, one of the largest maternity hospitals in Asia with 350 beds dedicated to gynaecology and obstetrics under the Delhi Municipal Corporation has become old and needs immediate renovation.

In July last year, a portion of a parapet wall between the hospital’s post-operative ward and the medical superintendent’s office collapsed, prompting the civic authorities to order a safety audit of the building.

“Around ₹2.5 crores for the structural upgrade and repair of the old sections of the hospital building will be invested. Over the next six months, improvement and structural repair work will be carried out in the OPD section blocks as well as the administrative buildings,” an official added.
