Nurses "burn out" in 12-hr shifts in Europe

An international study has recently discussed that 12-hr shifts, sometime opted by nurses themselves in Europe, seem to have taken an emotional and physical toll on them. Initially, the nurses have seemed to accept the 12-hr shift from the tradition 8-hr shift as it allowed them to squeeze in more personal time for themselves in a week long schedule-by working long shifts in day.
However, it is now reported that hospital nurses who work longer than 12-hour shifts have a higher risk of wanting to leave their job, and more likely to burn out in terms of emotional exhaustion, thereby affecting quality and safety of patient care, new research has found.
