Delhi plans to add 300 MBBS, 103 PG medical seats

New Delhi: In a major boost to medical education in the country, the Delhi government has proposed adding 300 undergraduate MBBS seats, 103 postgraduate and Diplomate of National Board (DNB) seats, and five fellowship seats across its medical institutions.

The proposal is part of its phased expansion of medical education capacity and is being sent for approval to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and other authorities.

UG seats expansion

As part of this roadmap, the government has adopted a three-pronged approach, comprising greenfield projects, brownfield expansion of existing institutions, and the expansion of postgraduate and advanced medical programmes.

The roadmap aims to address the shortage of medical and dental professionals in government hospitals and beef up the healthcare workforce, according to the Delhi government.

Under the proposed greenfield expansion, 150 MBBS seats each are planned at the under-construction medical colleges attached to Indira Gandhi Hospital (IGH), Dwarka, and Guru Gobind Singh Hospital.

The government has proposed increasing MBBS intake at Dr B S Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital from 125 to 200 seats, while the intake of Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences' BDS is proposed to rise from 50 to 70 seats.

PG and DNB seats to increase

PTI has reported that the proposed expansion also includes an increase in postgraduate medical training capacity. The PG intake at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) is proposed to increase from 260 to 295 seats, while MAIDS' PG intake is proposed to increase from 22 to 42 seats. PG courses with 24 seats are also proposed at BSA Medical College.

The roadmap further proposes 103 additional PG and DNB seats across Delhi’s government medical institutions. The detailed institutional breakup includes 24 MD/MS seats at Dr B.S.A. Medical College, 35 MD/MS seats at MAMC, 18 DNB seats at IGMC, 8 DNB seats at Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, 2 DNB seats at GTB Hospital, 4 MD/MS seats at UCMS & GTB Hospital, 2 DNB seats at Guru Gobind Singh Government Hospital, 4 DNB seats at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, 2 DNB seats at Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital and 4 MD seats at Delhi State Cancer Institute

Together, these account for 67 MD/MS seats and 36 DNB seats, taking the total proposed addition in PG and DNB capacity to 103 seats.

Five fellowship seats proposed

In addition, 5 fellowship seats have been proposed. Of this, three will go to GTB Hospital and the rest to Delhi State Cancer Institute, taking the total proposed addition in advanced medical training seats to 108.

Commenting on this, Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh told IANS, "The Delhi government plans to increase medical education capacity across the National Capital through a phased expansion of Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) and Super-Specialty (SS) medical seats."

The Health Minister said the expansion reflects the Delhi Government’s commitment under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to build a healthcare system supported by adequate and highly trained human resources.

“Expanding medical education is not merely about increasing the number of seats. It is about creating a sustainable pool of trained doctors, specialists and super-specialists who can serve Delhi’s citizens,” he said.

“The Delhi Government is pursuing a planned and phased expansion of medical education capacity, while ensuring that infrastructure, faculty and patient-care requirements grow alongside it," said Pankaj Kumar Singh.

Medical Dialogues had reported in April 2026 that the Delhi government had proposed 108 PG, DNB and Fellowship seats across 10 government medical institutions.
