Inadequate Faculty, Infrastructure! 24 UP Medical Colleges Slapped Show-cause Notice

Lucknow: The Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) has decided to slap show-cause notices on at least 24 private medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh for failing to meet the faculty requirement and proper infrastructure.
DMET decided to take action against the colleges after conducting inspections in the medical institutes. During the inspection, it was revealed that there were significant deficiencies, including a shortage of qualified faculties and inadequate infrastructure.
Serving show-cause notices to the colleges, the authorities have asked the institutes to respond to the deficiencies. In this regard, the officials have informed that if the colleges fail to provide satisfactory responses, it may adversely affect the upcoming fee revisions and impact the intake capacity of the colleges.
The medical colleges have been asked to justify why there were such shortcomings even though the colleges claimed to comply with the existing regulations. Meanwhile, some of the medical college authorities had raised questions regarding the timing of the inspection.
As per the latest media report by Hindustan Times, during the inspection, the medical colleges were assessed for seven key areas including infrastructure, faculty attendance for three months, salary slips for six months, OPD and indoor patient data, operation theatre logs, students fee details, and direct student interactions. It was found that the teaching staff at around 12 colleges were absent without any prior notice.
Commenting on the matter, the Director General of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh, Kinjal Singh said, "Reports indicate deficiencies in most of the inspected colleges. While the issues vary, all non-compliant institutions will be asked to explain."
Currently, there are 36 private medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh including the colleges that run under public-private partnerships and minority institutes, collectively offering 6,600 MBBS seats.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that last year the National Medical Commission (NMC) had denied granting its nod to the 13 proposed new medical institutes after shortcomings were pointed out during the inspection, including deficiencies in the infrastructure and faculty strength.
After receiving the Letter of Disapproval from NMC for 13 newly established medical colleges, the Uttar Pradesh Government requested the Apex Medical Commission to authorize the commencement of MBBS courses at these institutes for the 2024-2025 academic session.
Even though the Commission had initially denied granting permission to these institutes, it later granted the Letter of Permission (LoP) to seven new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh.
