Pregnant woman dies at Midnapore Hospital, kin alleges expired saline administered
Kolkata: A 21-year-old woman passed away following childbirth at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal's Paschim Midnapore. Her family members have raised serious concerns about the saline administered to her during treatment.
The incident took place on Friday and has sparked outrage and protests from the families of patients, as four more patients have also fallen ill due to the administration of the expired saline.
As per the recent media report by Millenium Post, the state Health department has sought a report from the Midnapore Medical College. A 10-member committee was constituted to probe the incident.
The deceased, identified as a 21-year-old woman from Garbeta in West Midnapore, was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after being brought in for childbirth. She gave birth to a child later that day but was reportedly administered saline along with several other women undergoing treatment. It is alleged that the saline bottles used were expired, which led to a series of health complications.
Following her health complications, she tragically passed away on Friday morning, and the other four women developed critical conditions, deteriorating rapidly since Thursday. These four patients have since been transferred to the ICU, where their health remains in serious condition.
The incident triggered a protest at the hospital where the grieving family members demanded answers and accountability. The families of the affected patients have expressed their outrage, alleging that the expired saline was the cause of the women’s deteriorating health. The deceased family, in particular, has claimed that she started vomiting and showed signs of severe discomfort shortly after being administered the saline.
The West Bengal Health Department has taken immediate action by requesting a report from the Midnapore Medical College regarding the incident. In response to the allegations, the hospital authorities have formed a committee to investigate the matter.
