Renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr B K S Sanjay takes over as AIIMS Guwahati President

Guwahati: Padma Shri awardee, Dr Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay, a world-renowned orthopaedic and spine surgeon, has been appointed as the new President of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati.  

AIIMS Guwahati is one of 19 AIIMS set up across the country under PM Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat. This step supports India’s goal of achieving Viksit Bharat 2047, focusing on strong economic growth, smart decision-making and the vision to make AIIMS institutions the foundational pillars of the "Viksit Bharat Mission."

A notification in this regard was issued by the government on August 18, which mentioned that the government has nominated Dr Sanjay for the new position. The nomination aims to strengthen healthcare, medical education, and research in the northeastern states, reports Free Press Journal

Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay, born on 31 August 1956 in Saidnagar, a small village in Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh, displayed brilliance in academics from an early age. Dr. Sanjay completed his MBBS from GSBM Medical College, Kanpur, in 1980. He later served in some of the country’s most reputed institutions, including PGI Chandigarh and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. Over the years, he earned fellowships from several countries, such as Japan, the USA, Russia, Australia, and Sweden, continually enhancing his expertise. His research papers have been published in prestigious international journals, and he has delivered guest lectures across the globe.

In recognition of his exemplary contribution to medicine, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri, one of the nation’s highest civilian honours. His pioneering work in surgery has earned him multiple accolades, including entries in the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records. He also holds a place in the India Book of Records for his social achievements.

Among his remarkable feats, in 2005, he set a world record by successfully removing the largest tumour of bone, a milestone acknowledged worldwide. Additionally, he secured a place in the Limca Book of Records in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2009 for several innovative surgical achievements.

Beyond his clinical excellence, Dr. Sanjay has also been a leader in his field, serving as the founding president of the Uttarakhand branch of the Indian Orthopaedic Association. He is an active member of numerous national and international medical organisations.

Over the years, he has received several honours, including the Uttarakhand Ratna, Uttaranchal Gaurav, Scott Foundation France Award, President Appreciation Award, National Healthcare Excellence Award, Dr. Durga Prasad Popular Physician Award, Nation Builder Award, Mussoorie Ratna, Health Icon Award, Best Orthopedic Surgeon in India Award, and Six Sigma Healthcare Excellence Award, among many others.
