Karimnagar Student’s Alleged Suicide

Vijayapura: In an unfortunate incident, a 27-year-old postgraduate student at B M Patil Medical College allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her hostel room.

The medico's father who filed a complaint at the police station claimed that she was feeling helpless and frustrated from being sexually harassed by a senior medical student on the campus.

As per the father's statements in the complaint, the student apart from being sexually harassed, was also facing blackmail from the accused. Even though she reported the ordeal to the Department Head and the professors, no action was taken.

BJP leader Vijugouda Patil. Patil while speaking to DH, claimed that the medical college authorities are trying to hush up the suicide of the student. He claimed that the student was reportedly struggling with persistent sexual harassment by a senior medical student and had reached out to her friends and brother for support before her death.

“Unable to bear sexual harassment by a senior student, *** (27) a native of Hyderabad, who was pursuing her second year in postgradutaion (pediatrics) at B M Patil Medical College, died by sucide. Before taking the extreme step, she had informed about the harassment to her friends and her brother," Vijugouda Patil said quoting the complaint lodged by the medico's father.

The student from Hyderabad was pursuing her postgraduate second year in paediatrics and was a resident doctor. The incident took place on February 9 when her dead body was discovered in her hostel room. No suicide note was discovered at the scene. It is reported that the student was allegedly unable to bear the harassment and as a result, she took the extreme step.

Following the student's death, her father filed a complaint against the accused at the APMC police on February 10. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under relevant sections of BNS but no arrests have been made so far.

Speaking to DH, Patil alleged that despite the deceased father filing a complaint with the police, no arrests had been made. Due to the following inaction, he announced his plan to stage a protest in front of the BLDE office today, calling for justice for the student and stringent action against those responsible.

Further, he demanded action against a doctor for abetment to suicide and sought action against an HoD and a professor for alleged failure to take action against the perpetrators.
